RM5 Bln Sukuk Simpanan Rakyat 2009 Fully Subscribed

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) - The RM5 billion Sukuk Simpanan Rakyat 2009 has been fully subscribed after nine days of sale, the Finance Ministry announced today.

Agent banks will no longer accept new applications with immediate effect, said the ministry in a statement.

The ministry said the initial amount of RM2.5 billion for the sukuk was upsized by using the allocation of the second series.

Thus, the entire allocation of RM5 billion is fully allotted to successful applicants and hence there will be no more issuance of the second series, it said.

The three-year Sukuk Simpanan Rakyat 2009 allocation was based on a first-come, first-served basis.

The sukuk, which is scripless, will be issued on May 14, 2009.

Successful applicants will be notified by their agent banks, the ministry said, adding that the successful applicants will be issued an initial statement on the amount allotted beginning May 19, 2009.

Those who need further information on the sukuk can contact Bank Negara Malaysia TeleLink at 1300-88-5465 or by visiting the www.treasury.gov.my or www.bnm.gov.my/sukuksimpanan websites.

All 980 Mln ASW 2020 Units For Non Bumiputeras Taken

JOHOR BAHRU, April 27 (Bernama) -- All the 980 million Amanah Saham Wawasan 2020 (ASW 2020) units for non Bumiputeras, from the total 2.0 billion units allocated under the fund, were fully taken up by 11.50 this morning.

The sales of the ASW 2020 units began at 8.00 am today at the Amanah Saham Nasional Bhd (ASNB) offices and Pos Malaysia offices nationwide, and at 9.15 am at ASNB agents namely Maybank, CIMB Bank and RHB Bank.

The latest ASW 2020 offer was based on a quota of 51 percent for Bumiputeras and 49 percent for non Bumiputeras.

"The response this time around was even better," the President and Group Chief Executive of Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), Tan Sri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman, told reporters after the closing ceremony for the Minggu Saham Amanah Malaysia (MSAM) 2009 investment week here today.

Interested subscribers for the ASW 2020 were seen lining up at the main ASNB counter in Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur as early as 4.00 am today in order not to miss the chance of subscribing to the unit trust fund.

It was the same scenario at ASNB's office in Kuching, Sarawak and the venue of the MSAM investment week here where potential investors lined up to buy the shares.

On the possibility of PNB increasing the size of ASW 2020, Hamad Kama Piah said: "For now, we will see first. We need to focus on ensuring that each investment brings in good returns. That is the reason why we want to balance up our portfolio and ensure the optimisation of the portfolios."

ASW 2020 is a fixed-price unit trust fund opened to all Malaysians aged six months and above.

It was first launched in August 1996 with a fund size of 3.0 billion units. Its current size stands at 12.42 billion units.

Meanwhile, PNB Chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid in his speech said that as at March 31, 87 percent of PNB unit trust fund holders held less than 10,000 units in their trust funds.

The average investment of each investor currently is at 9,338 units, he said.

"PNB will continue to work towards increasing the investment of each of its unit trust fund participant, and the average being aimed at is 15,000 share units for each shareholder, which is a realistic target," he said.

As for the MSAM 2009 event here, a total of 156,000 visitors have been estimated to have attended the week-long event which was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on April 20.

Nokia shows off Aeon 'wearable' concept phone

Nokia has unveiled its latest concept phone, designed to highlight the company's focus on products that allow users to more readily stamp their personality on their gadgets.

The concept phone, dubbed Aeon, combines two touch-sensitive panels mounted on a fuel-cell power pack. The handset's connectivity and electronics are built into the panels to allow them to be used independendently. When assembled, one panel would operate as the display, the other as the keypad. Since the buttons are entirely virtual, Aeon can flip instantly between a numeric pad for dialling, a text-entry pad for messaging, or a media-player controller.

It's a cute idea and one that ties in with Nokia's expectation that phones will become essentially "wearable" devices - if foresees users removing one of Aeon's display panels and mounting it on a watch-like strap or worn as a badge.

More than a phone, Aeon might tap into local wireless networks to transmit data acquired from sensors such as devices that monitor the user's health signs - which is the kind of application the company has in mind for its Wibree personal-area network technology. ®

M'sians Respond Overwhelmingly To ASM Units Sale

JOHOR BAHARU, April 22 (Bernama) -- The additional 3.33 billion Amanah Saham Malaysia (ASM) units offer received overwhelming response from Malaysians of all walks of life, says Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), Malaysia's biggest fund manager.

PNB president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman said as at 12.17pm today, all the 999 million units allotted to the Chinese were snapped up while the Indians bought 53.5 million units or 10.71 per cent of the 499.5 million units set aside for them.

The Bumiputeras bought 7.65 million units, he said in a statement.

"As there are 446 million units yet to be bought by the Indians, I urge them to seize the opportunity to buy the units specially allocated for them.

"Similarly, I hope Bumiputeras and other Malaysians will also not allow the available investment opportunity to slip away," he said.

Hamad Kama Piah said Malaysians who missed the chance to invest in ASM would have another investment opportunity when two billion additional units of Amanah Saham Wawasan 2020 (ASW 2020) are on sale from Monday.

Fifty-one per cent of the units have been allocated for Bumiputeras and 49 per cent for non-Bumiputeras, he said.

Investment is limited to 20,000 units per account holder, he said, adding the limitation is to allow as many Malaysians to invest in ASM and ASW 2020.

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the unit sale on Monday.

Of the 3.33 billion ASM units offered, 1.665 billion units were offered to Bumiputeraa, 999 million units to the Chinese, 499.5 million units for Indians and the balance of 166.5 million units for other Malaysians.

Satyam: No layoffs now, salary cuts possible

Tech Mahindra chairman Anand Mahindra on Monday ruled out immediate job losses among the 45,000-odd Satyam employees but added that an integration team “is already in place in Hyderabad to decide on the staff strength” for the acquired company. Speaking at a press conference after the first detailed meeting with the staff of the company taken over by Tech Mahindra last week, he said, “Our immediate plan would be to retain current customers, win back businesses and retain the key 100 associates.”

The plans also include finding a CFO for Satyam, said Vineet Nayyar, CEO of Tech Mahindra. “We are on the lookout for a CFO, who would be decided in the next few weeks.” One of the first tasks of the new incumbent could be asking for a salary cut of at least 10% across all categories, a source close to the company said.

Chairman of the government-appointed board, Kiran Karnik, said, “One cannot say anything on layoffs now. A list of key 100 employees, which was drawn by AS Murthy, and who were responsible to get businesses even during the crucial period after Raju’s disclosure, has been given to Tech Mahindra and (they) have been asked to retain them for an year.”

PNB to offer additional 5bil units for ASM and ASW2020

JOHOR BARU: Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) will offer an additional 3.33 billion units of Amanah Saham Malaysia from Tuesday and two billion units of Amanah Saham Wawasan 2020 from April 27, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The maximum allowed per investor is 20,000 units, he said in his speech at the launch of the Amanah Saham Malaysia Week on Monday.

Despite the current global uncertainties, the new inflow of money into unit trusts has been healthy, with RM5bil being invested in PNB-related funds so far, Najib added.

Last year, a total of RM10bil was invested.

He said PNB had a total of 9.3 million unit holders, with a total investment of RM87bil.

Najib advised young investors not to be influenced into investing in schemes that were not recognised. He cited how American millionaire Bernard Madoff conned the wealthy and educated through his pyramid scheme that promised huge returns in a short period.

Meanwhile, PNB chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid said the company has invested in 281 companies, of which 230 were listed on Bursa Malaysia in various sectors.

Satyam top brass agree to forgo salary revisions in FY 09

HYDERABAD: In a show of solidarity towards Satyam Computer Services in the current crisis, top level executives of the company have decided to
forego a salary revision for FY 2008-09.

The move by senior leaders in Satyam’s I-2 band and Band I-alpha comes on the back of strained finances and outstanding loans with banks.

The beleaguered firm has 46,600 employees on its rolls currently. Although quite a few employees working onsite on various projects were called back, the company still expends Rs 500 crore every month on paying employees’ salaries. The total variable pay outflow is about 7 per cent of Satyam's wage bill.

While in absolute amount terms the refusal of a hike may not be a very significant part of the total compensation and benefits of the organization, senior level employees reckon that the amount could be used to meet outstanding commitments in this last quarter, said an internal communication to senior associates

Satyam, once the fourth largest IT services provider in the country, saw around 6,400 odd employees exit the firm after its founder B Ramalinga Raju confessed to misappropriating its accounts for the last seven years.

However, 15-20% of the associates working on a specific accounts and verticals were retained for customer continuity.

El Chupacabra? 吸羊血的怪物

What is El Chupacabra?
El Chupacabra - Means "the goat sucker" in Spanish.

Named because of the way it sucked all the blood from Puerto Rican goats, the Chupacabra has been leaving fear in its tracks for many years now.

First spotted in Puerto Rico in 1994, the Chupacabra has since migrated off the island and has recently been spotted in many locations including South America as well as the US. Although it was named because of its choice of goat-blood as a meal, the Chupacabra has reportedly attacked and devoured the blood of a wide variety of animals including dogs and sheep. As far as we know, there have yet to be any human fatalities.

Due to the distinct technique the strange animal has of killing its prey, it is very easy to tell if the Chupacabra was involved in an animals death. Animals are found with puncture wounds in their neck and most of their blood removed. Often, the victim's organs have disappeared even though the only wound is a small hole in the animal's neck. Reports of laser-like cuts on the victim's ears are also common.

Although some people say they have seen the Chupacabra's tracks, in many cases there are no signs of blood or tracks around the dead animals.

Appearance

It is hard to describe the appearance of El Chupacabra because sightings greatly differ. Most say it is either gray or green. Some say it has a large lizard-like tongue, others say it has wings.

A bipedal creature (one that stands upright like a human), the Chupacabra has had many sightings where its height was reported to be anywhere from 3 and 6 feet tall. Some say it walks, some say it flies, and some say it has a kangaroo hop.

See our labeled drawing of El Chupacabra by hitting this link.

Where did it come from?

Like the descriptions of El Chupacabras' appearance, people's ideas of its origin widely vary. Many say it's a new species, or a relative to the panther. More eccentric scholars say it is a dinosaur or an alien. Another theory is that there is a portal to another dimension that stretches from Puerto Rico across to South America.

Our theory is that an alien spacecraft contained El Chupacabras' as pets or for study, and they somehow escaped during an accident, or a crash. You might have your own theory. If you do email it to us, we'll be glad to read it and we'll probably post it in the news if it is really interesting.

20/20 Way to slash individual TAXES

20) Invest in REITs
You can go into real estate investment trusts ( REITS )if your tax bracket above 15%.

There are 11 REITs listed on the Main Board.

The tax on dividends given out by these property-related investments are taxed at 15% as compared to tax on dividend at 26% ( under the new single –tier dividend system )

Only tax brackets exceeding 15% would enjoy some tax savings by investing in REITs

Since the distributions received by individual taxpayers have been subject to that 15% , the taxpayers are not required to declare the amount in their tax return.

Tax deduction:
Your tax saving is the difference between your personal tax bracket and 15%

19/20 Way to slash individual TAXES

19) Buy shares
Invest in dividend-yielding shares if your tax bracket is above 26%.

A new single-tier system was established under the national Budget for dividends received by shareholders.

Companies pay tax of 26% (YA2008) and shareholders receive a net dividend that is exempt from tax and does not need to be filed with the IRB “Shareholders who fall into higher tax brackets [higher than 26%] are essentially [getting a] saving on the difference.

“The single-tier dividends is intended to simplify the tax filing process for individuals,” says Chua Tia Guan, executive director and head of tax and financial planning at Great Vision Wealth Management Sdn Bhd.

“In the past, refunds had been slow. From now on, there is no need to declare or apply for a refund. And as corporate taxes are falling, companies will be able to pass on more profits to their shareholders [in the form of dividends],” he says.

However, not all companies will go under the single-tier system immediately as some of them might have imputation tax credits left, which they can use till 2013.

Shareholders who receive dividends from companies using the imputation system will have to report the amount received and claim a tax refund if his personal tax rate is lower than the company’s tax rate (27% in YA2007, 26% in YA2006).

Shareholders can identify the system used by the company as it is stated in the dividend vouchers.

Tax Deduction
Your tax saving is the difference between your tax bracket and 26% (the corporate tax rate). This is only applicable to dividends given out by companies using the single-tier system.

18/20 Way to slash individual TAXES

18) Buy Similar property
Similar property can be grouped together for income tax purposes.

The IRB has indentified categories such as residential , commercial and vacant land.

If you own two property in the same category , you can reduce the taxable profit made from one property with the loss, if any incurred from the other.

Property investors are also exempt from real property gains tax for all disposals on on or after 1st April 2007.

However , taxpayers who are trading property – buying and selling in order to generate income – are liable to income tax.

“ This exemption is meant for taxpayers who invest in property for a passive income”

Tax deduction :
Taxable income received from renting out a property in a particular grouping such as residential can be reduced if a loss was incurred by another property in the same group.

17/20 Way to slash individual TAXES

17) Buy property valued below or at RM250000
Stamp duty must be paid on all property transactions that involve a change of legal ownership.

Last year’s budget ( 2008 ) announced a 50% stamp duty exemption for the purchase of houses that do not exceed RM250000

The maximum tax savings that can be found here is RM2000 ( for a house worth RM250000 )

This exemption is only given for one house per individual and applies to sale and purchase agreement signed between September 2007 and December 2010

16/20 Way to slash individual TAXES

16) Hire a Tax Consultant
Consider hiring a tax consultant to explore ways your remuneration package can be structured to maximise your tax savings.

Those who are earning at least RM5000 every month should be able to justify the cost of hiring a tax adviser with their tax savings

Tax saving : this is dependent on your personal circumstances and the deal that you negotiate with your employer.

Tax – Savvy Investments
You may be looking at some investment this year.

There are savings to be made from certain investments , from a tax point of view.

However , some moves may be advantageous if you fall into a higher tax bracket .

Besides looking for tax-exempt investment , here are four investment moves to explore
