Motorola posts $397M 3Q loss; more job cuts

Motorola Inc. posted a hefty loss in the third quarter Thursday, citing the continued troubles of its cell phone division. The company will postpone the planned spin-off of the unit, and cut more jobs.

Motorola (nyse: MOT - news - people ) lost $397 million, or 18 cents per share, in the July-September period. It had earned $60 million, or 3 cents per share, in the same period a year ago.

Sales fell 15 percent to $7.48 billion.

The loss included 23 cents of charges, mostly for restructuring costs. Without the charges, Motorola would have earned 5 cents a share, reflecting unexpectedly strong results in its non-cell phone operations. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had on average expected the company to earn 2 cents per share on revenue of $7.82 billion.

For the fourth quarter, Motorola said it expects to earn 2 cents to 4 cents per share. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had expected the company to earn 7 cents per share in the quarter, excluding items.

Shares of Motorola fell 29 cents, or 5.3 percent, to close at $5.17, even as broader markets ended up higher.

The job cuts are part of efforts to cut costs by $800 million next year, Chief Executive Greg Brown said.

Motorola sold 25.4 million cell phones in the third quarter, down from the 28.1 million it sold in the second quarter. The company had said it expected a slight decline. With an 8.5 percent market share, it lost the spot as No. 3 cell phone maker worldwide to Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people )Ericsson (nasdaq: ERIC - news - people ) in the quarter, according to research firm IDC. Nokia Corp. (nyse: NOK - news - people ) and Samsung Electronics Co. are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

Tips on Filling your Vehicles

This is a Message received from a friend:
I don't know what you guys are paying for petrol... but here in Durban, we are also paying higher, up to 47.35 per litre. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every litre.
Here at the Marian Hill Pipeline, where I work in Durban, we deliver about 4 million litres in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.

One day is diesel; the next day is jet fuel, and petrol, LRP and Unleaded. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 litres.
ONLY BUY OR FILL UP YOUR CAR OR BIKKIE IN THE EARLY MORNING WHEN THE GROUND TEMPERATURE IS STILL COLD. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground, the denser the fuel, when it gets warmer petrol expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening.... your litre is not exactly a litre.

In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the petrol, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products play an important role. A 1degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

WHEN YOU'RE FILLING UP, DO NOT SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER OF THE NOZZLE TO A FAST MODE. If you look, you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode, you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapours that are created, while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapour return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapour. Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS IS TO FILL UP WHEN YOUR TANK IS HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank, the less air occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated, so that every litre is actually the exact amount.
ANOTHER REMINDER, IF THERE IS A FUEL TRUCK PUMPING INTO THE STORAGE TANKS, WHEN YOU STOP TO BUY, DO NOT FILL UP - most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Hope, this will help you get the maximum value for your money.

Beware of TNB bill

Beware of TNB bill

This is a TRUE story.

Do you check you TNB bill? Just check how much to pay and how many

used is no enough......

Do you compare the Meter reading on section 'DAHULU' (Red circle)

with previous month?

In this case, the April bill on DAHULU section is 29128, SEMASA is

29380. After paid the bill, the problem come.... The May bill come,

the DAHULU section by right should show 29380. BUT NOW, it still
show
29128 same per last month.

If we don't compare with last month, frankly, I had HAPPILY paid for

the bill and TNB had HAPPILY got the extra RM72 from me.

So... please check your bill and compare it month by month.

2008 World financial crisis‏

It is shaping up to be one of the most tumultuous times on record in the global financial markets. World financial markets fell sharply on Black Monday 6 October 2008 with stock exchanges in Brazil and Russia suspended after huge falls.

In the United Kingdom, £93 billion pounds were wiped-out from London shares in one day, the worst performance in 20 years. In Iceland, the Prime Minister says that the whole country may go bankrupt. It's currency fell over 30% in a single day against the Euro.

In Belgium, the country's largest banking group, Fortis has been nationalised.

In Germany, the country's second-biggest commercial property lender, Hypo Real Estate collapsed and was bailed out by the federal government last week. Today, it collapsed again. A new bail-out was arranged with guarantees of 50 billion euros ($68bn; £38.7bn), 15 billion euros more than the first rescue attempt.

The international financial crisis exposed the cracks in the European Union's single market. The EU countries are acting to prop up their own banks and financial institutions. Ireland was the first to break ranks by guaranteeing savers' money. Greece, Sweden, Austria and Denmark have all followed suit. And of course, the pledge by Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel to guarantee private deposit accounts has sown confusion and chaos in the markets.

THE CASUALTIES

As the global financial crisis has worsened, the number of firms to crumble or be bought out has increased.

BAIL-OUT BILL

Governments have spent billions of dollars on rescue packages, led by the US with its $700bn rescue package.
