Vehicle Sales Rise 22.87 Pct In Oct

Total vehicle sales in October 2009 rose by 22.87 per cent to 46,092 units as compared with the same month last year but the year-to-date market registered a 5.07 per cent contraction.

In October last year, the total vehicle sales was 37,512 units.

The sales up to October this year was 443,711 units versus the 467,425 units sold in the first ten months of 2008, said the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) in a statement Wednesday.

Of the total October sales, 41,520 units were passenger vehicles and the remaining 4,572 commercial vehicles, the MAA highlighted.

Production in October this year also increased by 4.13 per cent to 48,191 units from 46,281 units in October 2008 while year-to-date production declined by 10.07 per cent to 404,681 units from 449,988 units last year.

Of the total vehicles produced in October this year, 43,561 units were passenger and the remaining 4,630 units, commercial vehicles.

The MAA said sales volume for this month is expected to recover further amid a continuous favourable market and consumer sentiment, as well as year-end sales campaigns.

500,000 car sales for 2009 possible

PETALING JAYA: Local automotive analysts are mostly optimistic that 2009 car sales would meet or surpass the Malaysian Automotive Association’s (MAA) full year forecast of 500,000 units.

An analyst from a local bank-backed brokerage said the 500,000-mark was achievable despite a tendency for vehicle sales to slow down in the final quarter of the year – regardless of an economic downturn or not.

For the first eight months of 2009, vehicle sales stood at 351,558 units compared with 379,184 units sold during the same period in 2008. The MAA will be announcing vehicle sales for September later this month.

“You would need to sell another 148,442 units in the last four months of the year to reach 500,000 units. That’s an average of about 37,110 units a month,” the analyst told StarBiz.

“Monthly vehicle sales were lowest in February at 36,675 units, due to poor consumer confidence as a result of the global economic downturn and because it was the shortest month. Sales since have been over 40,000 units a month so the MAA forecast is achievable,” he added.

In its half-year briefing in July, the MAA revised upwards its total industry volume (TIV) forecast for this year to 500,000 vehicles from 480,000 due to improved economic conditions and consumer sentiment.

At 500,000 vehicles, the TIV is down 9% from the 548,115 units sold in 2008.

OSK Research auto analyst Ahmad Maghfur Usman also said MAA’s full-year target was “achiveable for sure,” adding that TIV in the fourth quarter was expected to ease.

“Most (buyers) would prefer registering their vehicle purchases towards next year. Some are also more keen to wait for new models as it has been rather quiet lately,” he said.

On whether he expected anything from Budget 2010, to be tabled next week, Maghfur said: “I expect a more liberalised auto sector as the Government tries to lure more value-added investments.

“Nonetheless, I don’t expect any change in the tax structure. Even if there were, it would be rather minimal; otherwise it would disrupt the secondary market.”

An AmResearch analyst who monitors the automotive sector said he was maintaining his initial forecast of a 14% drop in the TIV to 479,400 units for 2009.

“We’re still maintaining (the forecast) for now as risk leans more to the upside. Fourth quarter sales typically weaken as consumers hold back purchases for new year registrations.

“Perodua’s MPV (multipurpose vehicle) launch in November could provide a boost, but meaningful registration numbers (not bookings) are only expected probably from December or January,” he said.

The analyst said sales for September were likely to be weak or flat compared with August.

“Sales typically weaken towards the end of the year. August probably marked the start (of the slowdown). September this year also coincided with the Hari Raya festivities, (meaning) a shorter working month.”

He added that sales in September 2009 were unlikely to surpass the 50,729 units sold in September 2008.

“September last year was strong, being the month prior to Hari Raya when there were a lot of promotions.”

50 CIMB Traders In Singapore Under Quarantine For H1N1 Risk

Acccheewwww ! ... and you will be quarantine !

SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--Fifty traders in Singapore from stockbroking house CIMB-GK Securities have been told to stay home after one of them came down with the H1N1 flu virus.

"We have one confirmed case from the securities side. We are monitoring the situation and have activated our business contingency procedures," a CIMB-GK spokeswoman told Dow Jones Newswires.

These measures include splitting up employees from every department to minimize contact, she said.

CIMB-GK, a unit of Malaysian financial services group CIMB, has about 300 equities traders in Singapore.

The trader caught the flu from his son, who was infected at a popular night club in Singapore''s central business district. The trader has been admitted to hospital for treatment, the spokeswoman said.

"50 fellow occupants of the trading room that the infected remisier was working in have been placed under home quarantine for seven days. They will self-administer temperature checks and report back to work upon a clean bill of health," she said.

Singapore has more than 200 confirmed H1N1 cases, according to the city-state''s Ministry of Health.

IBM, Accenture Possible Satyam Suitors As Board Errupts

Shares of Satyam (SAY), the Indian outsourcing firm that has been rocked by scandal after a botched acquisition and reports that it was banned from business with The World Bank, are jumping this morning amid speculation of a management shaekup. Indian daily paper The Economic Times this morning reports that “a clutch of global IT services firms” are potential bidders to acquire Satyam, citing unnamed analysts. The article notes that “chances of a strategic takeover have brightened after the company announced the possible dilution of stake by founder and promoter B Ramalinga Raju on Saturday.” The story lists IBM (IBM), Accenture (ACN), and France’s Cap Gemini (CAP) among the possible suiters, and mentions U.S. private equity firm General Atlantic Partners and U.S. outsourcing firm Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTSH). In a separate story, the Economic Times notes that four independent directors on the company’s board have resigned, as of this afternoon, and that the board pushed out a meeting that was to take place this weekend until January 10 as it mulls measures to restore investor confidence. The Economic Times says it’s likely chairman Raju will be dismissed. Satyam shares rose 55 cents, or 7%, to $8.47.

Malaysia Software Development Center to be transitioned to Satyam Corporation

In an effort to drive Motorola’s strategy, strengthen our competitive position and improve cost structure and operational efficiencies, the Home & Networks Mobility business will discontinue operations at the Malaysia Software Development Center, whose primary focus is Network Management System development for Cellular Networks.

Therefore, Motorola will transition all employees and assets of the Malaysia Software Development Center to Satyam, a leading global business and information technology company, located nearby in Cyberjaya, Malaysia. After an extensive search and evaluation of alternatives, it was determined that Satyam is ideally positioned to provide Motorola with superior software development services and the Motorola team with excellent career opportunities.

After the close, Motorola will contract directly with Satyam Corporation for development services on its market leading network management software to continue to fulfill the needs of its customers. The transition is subject to regulatory and other customary closing conditions, and is expected to be completed by 31 December 2008. Until the sale is closed, it will be business as usual for the Malaysia Software Development Center team.

This decision is in the best interest of the Malaysia Software Development Center team and Motorola. We believe that the transition will open career opportunities for these employees and strengthen Motorola’s competitive position in Malaysia.

Motorola is committed to delivering on customers’ expectations without disruption or distraction. The Malaysia Software Development Center provides significant efforts for both internal programs important to customer deliverables and for external Motorola customers, such as Verizon and others. Our commitment to those programs remains constant.

I-Real
